BenOS HTML

Getting started, versions and the built-in apps.

How do I start using BenOS HTML?

Open mybenos.benjaminoriginals.com in any modern browser. There's nothing to install. Then open Settings and set up your account: your name, plus an optional password and hint.

Is BenOS HTML free?

Yes. It's free to use on the web, and free to download from GitHub.

Can I run BenOS HTML on my own computer?

Yes. On the GitHub page, click Code, then Download ZIP. Extract the files and open the HTML file in your browser (it's named something like “BenOS HTML version.html”). For your files to save permanently, run it through a local web server such as VS Code Live Server or Python's http.server instead of opening the file directly.

Is the web version different from the download?

No, it's the same OS. The web version updates automatically, and your data is kept when updates go out.

Does BenOS HTML change my computer's operating system?

No. It runs inside your browser and doesn't interact with or modify macOS, Windows, Linux or anything else on your device. That also means it doesn't replace your computer's own security.

Which apps come with BenOS HTML?

Twelve: BenAI, BenStudio, BenMusic, Files, Terminal, BenPen, BenViewer and BenBrowser, plus BenHealth, Calculator, the App Store and Settings. See what each one does.

What is BenAI?

The AI assistant built into BenOS HTML. Ask it anything, or tell it to do things in BenOS, like turning on dark mode or setting a reminder. You can also use the mic to talk to it, or press Ctrl + / to ask from anywhere.

Does BenAI send my chats anywhere?

No. BenAI's own models run on your device, and your chats stay there. Like any AI, it can make mistakes, so check important info.

Which browsers does it work in?

Any modern browser. Keeping your browser up to date gives you the best experience and the latest security fixes.

Can I request a song for BenMusic?

Yes. The BenMusic library keeps growing, and you can ask for new songs to be added. Just email us with the song you'd like.

Files & data

Where your files live and how to keep them safe.

Where are my files stored?

In your browser, using IndexedDB and localStorage.

I cleared my browser data and my files are gone. Can I get them back?

Unfortunately not. Clearing your browser's data or cache can permanently delete your BenOS files and settings, and they can't be recovered. Back up anything important.

Will an update erase my files?

No. Your data is kept when updates are pushed to the web version. Just be careful with your browser's cache and storage settings, and back up important files before you change them.

My files aren't saving in the downloaded version. What's wrong?

Opening the HTML file straight from your computer can stop your files from saving permanently. Run it through a local web server, such as VS Code Live Server or Python's http.server, so your files are kept.

Account & security

Passwords, staying safe and reporting problems.

I forgot my password. What can I do?

That's what the password hint in Settings is for, so set one up if you haven't. If you're still locked out, email us and we'll do what we can.

Will Benjamin Originals ever ask for my password?

Never. We will never ask for your passcode or login details by email, direct message or on any other platform. If someone does, it isn't us.

How do I keep my account safe?

Pick a passcode you can remember and don't reuse it anywhere else. Keep your browser and device up to date, and always log out when you use BenOS HTML on a shared or public computer.

I found a security problem. How do I report it?

Email contact@benjaminoriginals.com with the details. We usually reply within 24 to 72 hours and start on a fix right away. Security updates cover BenOS HTML V1 Calvin and V1 Beta.

Demo Mode

Showing off BenOS HTML on a display device.

What is Demo Mode?

A way to set BenOS HTML up on a display device and let anyone try it. BenOS Connect is built in, so visitors can only reach what you want to show, never your own files.

How do I turn Demo Mode on?

Open Settings, go to Users, and switch on Demo Mode. It starts right away.

How do I turn Demo Mode off?

Switch the same toggle off and enter your admin password. Nobody else can turn it off.

What can visitors do during a demo?

They can use BenBrowser, BenMusic, BenPen and Settings. They can't open Files or Terminal, clear notifications, shut down, log out of the demo user, delete important things, or change the demo user's name, password or hint.

Building apps

BenStudio, the App Store and how apps run.

Can I make my own apps?

Yes. BenStudio lets you write HTML, CSS and JavaScript with a live preview, and you can install what you make right in BenOS HTML. If you can write HTML, you can build an app.

How do I get my app into the App Store?

Send it in with our app submission form. You'll need to sign in with a Google account to use it. App Store apps are on GitHub.

What happens if an app crashes?

Only that app goes down. Every app runs in its own sandbox, and BenOS HTML watches for crashes, so one broken app can't take down the whole OS.

Where can I see the source code?

BenOS HTML is on GitHub, and BenOS for Scratch is on GitHub too, under the MIT License.

BenOS on Scratch

Playing BenOS on Scratch and saving your setup.

How do I play BenOS on Scratch?

Open BenOS Matrix on Scratch, or play it right on our BenOS on Scratch page. It's always better in full screen.

What should I do first?

Open Settings and set up your passcode. Then find your SDC in the You app and keep it somewhere safe.

Why should I save my SDC?

With your SDC saved, you never have to set everything up again. To avoid typing it over and over, lock BenOS with the lock icon in the upper-right corner.

An older version didn't save my data. Why?

Older versions may not save your data. Use the latest release, BenOS Matrix, day to day. See every release.

Can I download BenOS for Scratch?

Yes. It's open source, so you can get it from GitHub and run it locally.
